East Lothian

East Lothian is quite simply one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland, and the Chippendale International School of Furniture sits at the heart of it.

 

The county stretches from the eastern edge of Edinburgh to the North Sea coast. It is rich in history, with rugged castles and ancient settlements scattered across the region, and its historic market towns, such as Haddington give it a lively, friendly feel.

 

It has some of the finest farm land in Scotland but is also home to a number of modern industries such as electronics, chemical research and printing.

 

Tourism is an important industry too, with travellers coming from across the world to enjoy its many delights. East Lothian is a golfer’s paradise with 19 courses, including the world’s oldest surviving course, Musselburgh Links and Muirfield, which has hosted the British Open Championship 14 times since 1892.

 

Other places of interest include the Museum of Flight at East Fortune, Glenkinchie, Scotland’s most southerly distillery and the Bass Rock which is a sanctuary for seabirds and the third largest gannetry in the world. John Muir, the founder of America’s National Parks and the world’s first conservationist was born in Dunbar, and his legacy is remembered at visitor’s centre in the seaside town.
