An integral part of the course is the programme of visits to some of the UK’s best known historical houses and ancestral homes and fine furniture workshops. This gives students the opportunity to examine pieces by leading furniture makers in their proper setting. This includes works by Thomas Chippendale himself, as well as Jacobean oak and Queen Anne furniture, Italian marble pieces, a Robert Adam interior as well as contemporary work by some of Scotland’s finest craftsmen and women.
The workshop visits, where students enjoy practical demonstrations and discussions with experienced furniture designers, gives then an insight into how to run a successful business.
