Peter Bailey
When Peter Bailey graduated from Chippendale, he didn’t leave the school. Instead he became one of the first students to take advantage of the new work spaces that are now available for start up businesses. Here he creates stunning paintings and individual items of furniture using dyed veneers.
“Finding Chippendale was serendipity,” the former international development consultant explains. “I was looking for somewhere that I could use my creative side, and here was the school right on my doorstep.”
“As soon as I visited, I knew it had the right kind of atmosphere, and the course was just the right length. I had looked at other courses, but at two or three years duration they were too long.”
Very quickly into the course Peter realised he wanted to develop his own style and he started experimenting with veneers. “Scotland has some of most beautiful sycamore trees in the world, and it makes a wonderful veneer. When it is dyed, it is like silk.”
He is rapidly gaining a reputation as an artist in wood. “Ideally I would like to do two or three furniture commissions a year, and spend the rest of the time developing my paintings. The atmosphere here is very encouraging. I can’t think of anywhere else I would rather work.”
