Tjerand Gjerde

Norwegian Tjerand Gjerde was student of the year in 2006 – 07. His remarkable Jupe* table, which is made in sections, is one of Anselm Fraser’s favourite students pieces. “It is simply stunning,” he says.

Tjerand is now back home in Norway where he has his own workshop. “I employ one person and probably need to employ another member of staff quite soon as I have a full list of commissions. My next project is an oak bureau with high legs.”

“I have very high goals for my business, I want to build a workshop with an international reputation, making a small number of items – and I am keen to make more expanding tables.

*London cabinetmaker Robert Jupe invented a way to extend a circular table from a diameter of 60" to a larger diameter by means of an innovative capstan and arms. He patented his design in 1835.
