The 30 week Professional course provides students with a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of designing and making bespoke furniture. Each student will make at least two original pieces during the course.

However, it is only through the study of restoration that students are able to properly learn the widest range of techniques. This is why students restore at least three items of antique furniture each during the course.

They also learn the history of furniture, from Thomas Chippendale through to top contemporary designers.

Business and marketing skills are an integral part of the course,
giving students the confidence to turn their hobby into a business. In the second term the Principal offers each student individual advice on their future career.

Safety is paramount at the school. Students do not use any of the machine tools until they have been instructed in their safe use and health and safety messages are woven throughout the course.

A programme of visits to Scotland’s top museums, workshops and private collections gives students the chance to see great pieces in context.

The course ends with a graduation ceremony for family and friends where the Student of the Year is announced.

This is followed by an open evening for the school’s wide network of supporters. The students' work will be on display and they may offer it for sale to help recoup the cost of their school fees.

The course is demanding, yet very rewarding. Little wonder then that people come from all over the world to study at the Chippendale International School of Furniture.

The exact tasks and techniques learned can be found in the individual sections for each term.
